He was close to his mother, who died when he was young.

His favourite brother died in the war.

His marriage was a disaster. The girl soon fancied someone else and left home with him.

And then, through no fault of his own, he lost all he had on the Stock Exchange.

This is the story of Jack MacBryan. He wanted to play for Middlesex but had to be content playing for Somerset, with a bunch of 'terrible amateurs'.

He played a Test match in which he didn't get a chance to bat.

But he was lucky.

South Africa's Bevil Rudd won the 400-meter event in the 1920 Olympic Games.

But most of the British competitors were ushered off home as soon as their events were over.

MacBryan was still there (as part of the British Hockey team), however, at the time of the prize-giving by the King of Belgium.

He was asked to take Rudd's place.

He is the only Test cricketer to receive an Olympic gold medal in athletics.
